This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
